Barbel are a powerful, streamlined river fish prized by anglers for their strength and hard-fighting runs. Recognisable by their barbel-like whiskers (barbules) around the mouth, bronze-brown colouring, and torpedo-shaped body. They are found in rivers but over the last 20 years they have shown their ability to adapt to still waters and are now commonly found in fisheries. They give variety to fisheries and there are still many anglers that have not caught one.

Barbel are most commonly found in large, fast-flowing UK rivers, but they can adapt well to still waters when fish density is kept moderate. Oxygen requirements are higher than for some pond species, although Barbel are generally more tolerant of lower oxygen levels than Perch.
Trout pellets make an ideal supplementary feed for Barbel, giving them the extra protein boost they need alongside natural pond forage.
